The reason that an explosion is caused by mjolnir hitting Cap’s shield is because they’re made of the same metal. When Mjolnir was forged “in the heart of a dying star” the resulting explosion caused a small amount of the metal to reach Earth which was later found by Howard Stark. This is also why Steve can pick up Mjolnir.
